Let us first read about the legend behind this auspicious month and get knowledge about why Lord Shiva is worshipped this month.

As per the ancient Hindu scriptures, it is believed that during the month of Sawan churning of ocean (Samudra Manthan) happened between Gods and Demons. While churning the ocean, lots of things came out and were divided among the Gods and Demons. One of the deadliest things that came out was poison (Halahala). To save the world from its bad effects, Lord Shiva took it and consumed it. As a result, he is also known as Neelkanth.

#LordShiva acted as savior of the mankind and universe by consuming the poison. Since, then he is worshipped in the month of Sawan and the Sawan Somvars are given utmost importance.

This was the legend or story behind the worshipping of Lord Shiva during the Sawan month and observing Sawan Somvar Vrat. Now, we must also take a look at the significance of this prosperous month and importance of observing fast of Mondays.

Significance of Sawan Somavar Vrat 2014

The significance of Sawan Somvar Vrat is as follows –

It is believed that these fasts are highly beneficial for the unmarried females. As by observing the Somvar Vrat, they get married to the person of their choice.

Sawan Somvar Vrat is significant because by observing the fast, desire of a person are fulfilled and all dreams come true.

Hence, by observing the fast and worshipping Lord Shiva, a person can achieve desired results. So, this year don’t forget to observe the Shiva fast on Monday.

The entire month of Sawan is filled with joy and festivity. It is not a matter of just four Mondays, but the Sawan Somvar are divided into three major categories. These are as follows –

Sawan Somvar Vrat – It is observed on Monday’s on the month of Sawan.

#SolahSomvar Vrat – It is observed in the month of Sawan.

#SomPradosh Vrat – This fast is kept till the evening in the Shravan Maas.
